The Dark Knight Chronicles

Once again, we have another production of that mysterious hero; Batman. This production decides to take the Dark Knight to a whole different angle: Full Blast Funny! This is a series that has no intention of taking itself seriously or taking Batman too seriously either. Does it work?

You bet it does. I’ve had several laughs through out the video series. The production is well polished and loaded with talent. The storyline has some fun characters and funny lines. It gets a bit cheesy and slow at times. But it’s a lot of fun and my biggest criticism is that there aren’t enough videos in this series. I want more! I give this series a high half-squashed pumpkin. Enjoy!!

Malice

The story of Malice begins, through the voice of the youngest of two daughters, with a typical family day until the phone rings and they learn that their grandmother is dead and their mom inherits the dead matriarch’s home. No time is wasted. The family moves into their new home only to quickly learn that their new home is no ordinary home. In fact, it’s damn creepy!

I got hooked on the plot right from episode one. The creators of this series don’t waste our time with useless scenes. They get right down to the meat and potatoes of the storyline. This is a thriller and so it does require a feel of suspense and fearfulness continually boiling through the plot-line. This show does not disappoint. There were many times that I jumped out of my seat. The CGI is surprisingly good for a low budget show. Bravo!

So, why am I giving this show a half squashed pumpkin? While, I do encourage you to give this show a good try, it it does have its flaws. There are plenty of cheesy moments that cannot be ignored, like how Dad can suddenly shoot a gun with perfect precision right after drinking several beers. Somehow, Alice was able to get hot water for her bath, even in a house that doesn’t have electricity. And, there were some decisions that Dad made, or didn’t make, that were a bit hard to swallow. Plus, the episodes are too short. They could be at least 10 minutes long. 5 minutes is much too short for a show of this sort. We loose that emotional tension that a thriller builds with time.

Still, click the image above and watch this web series. It’s fun. It’s entertaining. I love the teen girls. They are cool characters! And both actresses play them very well.

Chosen

In this original Crackle online series, a typical day for a typical single father of a young daughter suddenly takes a shocking turn when he finds a box at his doorstep. Encased in the box is a loaded gun and instructions to kill someone he’s never met. And if he doesn’t kill this person? His own family (especially his daughter) is at risk of losing their lives. And so the story begins.

This season holds six episodes. Each one is full of suspense and tension. The production is high quality. The acting is polished. The story is well written. I got hooked on this series right away. I love it! It’s intense. It’s daring. It’s shocking!

There are others, who watched this first season, who were quite vocal about their dislike for the way in which episode 6 ended. If you keep in mind that episode 6 is NOT the end of the story, you can get past that it is quite a shocking cliffhanger. I highly recommend that you give this show a try. Click the image above to start watching it. You won’t be disappointed.

A fully unsquashed pumpkin. Of course!

The Clearing

This short film starts in a jungle where a man finds himself and, soon, his girl injured. We never get to know how the two of them got there. But it doesn’t really matter. This is one of those plot lines where mystery plays a powerful roll in the storyline. We find ourselves following the two main characters as they run from some men they think are a threat… later we learn what they are really running from.

It’s a touching film. Beautifully shot. Well acted and directed. the ending is nothing I expected it to be. I loved this film. I think you may enjoy it too.

A fully intact pumpkin for this well produced short film!

Jailbait

This hilarious story follows a character named Ozzie O’Conner who finds himself in prison for the first time in his life. He takes us along for the ride as he tries to fit into prison culture and social rules.

This is truly one of the funniest shows on the net. It’s written by John Lehr and Nancy Hower. John Lehr also stars in the series as Ozzie O’Conner and, I must say, he does an excellent job playing the roll. Nancy Hower also works as the director. She, too, does a fantastic job keeping a well run pace to the plot. There isn’t a moment of boredom. This duo shocks the viewer with twists in the story and tons of puns and funny lines. Jailbait is a rare gem on the internet.

A fully intact pumpkin goes to this production. Well done! A must see!!

Urban Wolf

The story takes place in Paris, although one doesn’t get to know that until much later into the series. The plot follows a man who is always on his own, yet never alone. He is being followed by some stranger who manages to see every move this man makes through cameras all over the city; on the streets, inside public washrooms, subways, everywhere.

This show is nominated, this year, for a Webby Award and I don’t know really know how to respond to that. I’m not sure why it is nominated, to be honest. The show has the same, flat plot each and every episode. A man we never get to know anything about is always walking the streets of Paris alone. Eventually in the episode he, again, finds out that someone is watching him on camera. Then the chase between him and the mystery camera man begins and ends… until next episode.

Episode 1 involves the man being watched in a public washroom. But more than that happens. Mysteriously, an invisible being enters the bathroom and flips the man on his back. I was instantly intrigued. I thought the show was going to move in a supernatural direction. But the story never entertains that angle of the plot again. We never get to know who flipped that man in the public bathroom. It certainly wasn’t the ‘camera man’. So therefore, there must be someone else in the conspiracy. However, we never get know. It never comes back in the story again. Many parts of the plot get dropped like that and little to no information about any of the characters get revealed.

There are just too many holes in the plot and too many questions that never get answered. In spite of the Webby nomination, I still can’t give this show even half a squashed pumpkin. This series gets fully squashed.

Angel Of Death

Angel Of Death is an action packed series about assassins who are blindly assigned people to kill. No questions are to be asked. Just kill and get out.

Zoe Bell, well known as Lucy Lawless’ stunt woman in “Xena Warrior Prince,” stars as Eve. Bell is well cast in this series. She is a great actor and, it must be said, she works her fight scenes flawlessly.

This New Zealand production is beautiful looking with high quality camera work and post production work. However, this show tries its hardest to be like the movie, “Kill Bill” and yet, it is no where near it. Oh, it’s packed with the same level of violence shown in “Kill Bill” but it takes more than ugly violence to make a wickedly exciting action thriller. Angel of Death lost my keen interest when, in episode 2, Eve recovered miraculously from a near impossible injury to survive from. The way in which they healed her (not to be spoiled in this blog) just made me roll my eyes asking, “Who writes this stuff?”  It’s too bad the script is so weak for such an amazingly talented show in all the other areas.

I give this series a half squashed pumpkin with a STRONG encouragement to check it out, if for no other reason than to watch Zoe Bell  at her best – in hard action fight scenes.

Fallen Art

This film has been on the internet for a few years now. But I can’t resist sharing one of the most amazing pieces of animated story telling I’ve ever seen. Fallen Art is a Polish animated short film that depicts the insanity of… war? Listen, I have to confess, I’m not totally sure what this film is trying to tell us. I have several interpretations. Every time I watch it, I interpret it differently and I’ve watched it many times over. The literal storyline has an officer commanding obedient solders to walk off a plank to their imminent death. The reason why is morbidly insane. It’s for a motion picture that another animated character is creating which depicts solders dancing. But they aren’t dancing. They are dead.

It’s crazy. It’s brilliant. The animation is outstanding. The storyline is layered with hidden messages. You will want to watch this more than once. I promise you that.

A fully intact pumpkin for this brilliant piece of work! If you are a fan of animation or simply a fan of great movies, you have to check this award winning film out.

The Dead Hour

The Dead Hour pays homage to the twisted, creepy genre created by that masterfully classic show, “The Twilight Zone.” Like The Twilight Zone, each episode is a unique, complete story. And like The Twilight Zone, each story is twisted beyond description.

The Dead Hour is a well-produced, high quality production. The stories are rich and well told. The acting is polished. The camera work is excellent.

If you aren’t squeamish, you’ll enjoy this show very much. Who am I kidding? I AM squeamish and I STILL enjoy this show.

(click the image to go to this show)

I like that the episodes are meaty (not 5-7 minutes long). The stories are original and well produced. This series is a don’t miss. I most certainly will not be squashing any pumpkin for this show. The Dead Hour’s pumpkin stays fully in tact!

Riese: Kingdom Falling

“Riese: Kingdom Falling” is a story about a young adult princes, named Riese, whose family has been violently dethroned from their reign. Riese is the only living member of her family. She and her sidekick, a lone wolf, spend every day of their lives staying alive while trying not to be found by the current, and illegal, reign of the throne.

I love this show. The production is clearly equal to that of a television production. In fact, the company that produces this show is working hard to get a large enough web interest to ensure an eventual television broadcast, which they are likely to get. This show is incredibly original from the half machine like man to the world they all live in which feels both medieval and other worldly. In fact, I think of it as a cross between Xena and Lord of the Rings. Riese, herself, is stronger than your average woman, capable of fighting off a whole band of men, with the help of her wolf of course. And I can’t quite figure out the world that this story takes place in but I’ve decided that it’s another planet somewhere in the Universe, like Middle Earth.

There are a total of 10 episodes, each of which is 10 minutes long making the entire production equal to that of a film. If you live in the US, you can watch all 10 episodes all at once. Those of us here in Canada, however, need to wait as they release each episode one week at a time on the Space channel’s website.

There will be no squashing pumpkins here. Riese: Kingdom Falling gets a fully intact pumpkin. If you have only time to watch one show today, you should give this one a try.
